She had woken that morning saying ‘don’t forget 1547’ and wondered if it made any sense to him. At the end of the letter Harris included a post script where she asked Crowley what happened in 1547. She talked of being ‘positively alarmed’ at the thought of ending the work and she worried about having to ‘return to the awful life’ she had been removed from during the previous two years. In a letter dated January 1940, Harris wrote how 26 cards had gone off to be mounted and how close they were to being ‘terrifyingly finished’. Harris helped support Crowley financially throughout the project and they corresponded often. He had originally intended the deck to be ‘traditional’, but she encouraged him to introduce his knowledge of many disparate disciplines to the project. By his own admission, artist Lady Frieda Harris played an influential role in shaping the deck. Aleister Crowley designed the Thoth Tarot.
